Strong back

The strong back is very important in building a boat. It must be strong enough to support the weight of the boat and all the stresses involved in boat building. The strong back has to be perfectly level widthwise and lengthwise throughout boat construction. I used B.C. fir plywood for added strength and durability as any number of different boats can be built on the same strongback. Plywood is also much more stable than dimensional lumber.

Boat Mold

The mold stations are cut from plywood and placed at 12 intervals on the strongback. The piece in the foreground with all the holes is the stem mold. The stem mold is used to steam bend the 2 stems for the bow (front) of the boat. The inside stem's purpose is to hold the ends of the planking in place.
