Soul Catcher

Peter first started carving in order to reproduce some of the most beautiful and spiritual carvings of the world. The First Nations people of the Pacific Northwest (the British Columbia coastal regions) are known worldwide for their carvings and art.
The Tsimshian Soul Catcher is Peter’s favourite piece. Soul Catchers can vary in size from necklaces to 5 foot long Guardians of the lodge’s smoke hole. It is believed that when a tribe member fell ill, his soul was lost to the Other world, a dangerous supernatural realm where all manner of spirits were on the loose. The Shaman would enter a trance and visit this realm where he would search out the lost soul and capture it in the Soul Catcher and bring it back to his world. The large Soul Catchers in the smoke holes of the lodge would protect their souls from being lost while they slept.
