Thunderbird
Peter first started carving
in order to reproduce what some of the most beautiful and spiritual
carvings of the world. The First Nations people of the Pacific Northwest
(the British Columbia coastal regions) are known world-wide for
their carvings and art.
The Kwakiutl tribe believed that one of many supernatural forces
or totem spirits was the Thunderbird. The Thunderbird was a huge
birdlike being who live in the skies and who kept lightning bolts
as companions. Because the Thunderbird was so powerful, his imagery
was frequently used for clan crest motifs.
This striking carving is reminiscent of a time and place where respect
for the environment was precious. The power of its gaze would make
it the focal point of any room.
